We are on a mission to help end poverty. We open schools for girls who do not have access.

Why Education

258 MILLION CHILDREN ARE NOT IN SCHOOL

In the School Year ending in 2018, UNESCO estimated that there were 258 million youth not attending school. UNESCO also estimates that 60 million people could come out of poverty if all adults were to finish 2 more years of school or finish Secondary education. This is the power of formal education. Currently, our focus is on bringing education to those who do not have access to it. We believe that the education of young children is a key in eliminating the poverty cycle and to create a better society. This is because education enables a person to fulfil their potential.

WHY GIRLS?

LITERACY RATES: 81% MEN VS 64% WOMEN

Educating girl children has been shown to transform families and full communities. When a girl is educated, she has better opportunities, a better future and values the essential need for educating her future generations. She is more likely to have fewer children, keep them healthier and is much more likely to send them to school, thus breaking the poverty cycle for herself and future generations. When she is educated, she is 6 times less likely to become a child bride and will resist exploitation and abuse. She can even bring her whole community out of poverty. In fact, there will be more female leaders, and with that there will be lower population growth and even a potential reduction in factors that contribute to adverse climate change.

Why are girls marginalized?

FOUR MAIN REASONS

(1) Prevalent gender bias: "Girl's don't need to study" and "Studying won't help them get married". (2) Economically and socially weak communities. Most girls (and some boys) end up dropping out of school to support the home, farm work or other domestic chores. When this happens and a family has both their sons and daughters at school, the first to leave are the girls. (3) Limited access to schools (contextual village to village). (4) They do not have access to adequate menstrual hygiene management.

How does Educating AMY enable change?

ONE BOOK EDUCATES ONE GIRL

For every book that we sell we send a girl in rural India to school. We know we can't end poverty by ourselves, but we know that the girls whom we enable through education can end the cycle for their families and their communities. As more and more girls are enabled, more and more communities will emerge out of poverty. When you buy a Book, we set a portion of the revenue aside to provide education to a girl for a month. However, to ensure a girl's education is not uncertain each month, we work with our partner Organizations to open schools that house 30 girls for a full year. We will continue to support each school that we open for its life and we commit to opening more and more of such schools.

Are we stopping in india?

OUR JOURNEY STARTED IN INDIA

Currently we have started this journey with India. In our numerous visits to India (from childhood for one of us), we have been strongly impacted by what we have witnessed first-hand. As parents of two little girls, it gives us more motivation to help. Furthermore, we have deep rooted connection with India and our journey to find the best artisans for our books took us to India! As we continue to grow and get your support, we plan to expand to other countries in the World where there is also a similar need.
